    Notes 
    • James was a student at the College of William and Mary and began practicing law in Richmond in 1818. In 1824 he was in charge of the arrangements for the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Virginia. He represented Charles City, James City, New Kent and Henrico counties and the city of Richmond in the Virginia Senate from 1839-43; served in the House of Delegates 1845-46; was a member of the Virginia Convention of 1850-51; and was a member of the Confederate Congress from Feb 1862 to Feb 1864. In 1864 he was appointed a trial judge of political prisoners. After the war he resumed law practice and assisted in the legal defense of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
