    Notes 
    • Charles was instructed in the art of ship-building, the occupation of his ancestors, but retired early in life due to his considerable wealth. In 1804 he was chosen one of the port wardens of Philadelphia, PA. In 1812, urged by his friend William Jones (Secretary of the US Navy), he accepted the position of Superintendent of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. During his time there he supervised the construction of the warship "Franklin" which was said to be the finest ship in the navy. He died of cholera.
