In 1848, he represented Lincoln Co. in the Kentucky House of Representatives, and was county judge from 1853-1862. He was quartermaster of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry and lieutenant colonel of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. His unit was part of Confederate President Jefferson Davis' body guard after Robert E. He was shot and killed behind Standford Presbyterian Church by 17 year old Samuel Holmes, who was drunk and disturbing the peace. A $1000 reward was posted but Sam Holmes was never captured.
