Notes |
- Clement Claiborne Clay was a U.S. Senator, 1853-61, but withdrew when Alabama succeeded from the Union. He became a C.S.A. Senator from 1861-63. He was head of Confederate secret agents and was accused of collaborating with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He and his wife, along with Jefferson Davis, were imprisoned at Fort Monroe for one year until released by President Andrew Johnson.
