    Notes
    • Robert Hazlehurst was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1792 and was admitted to the bar in 1796. He assisted Benjamin Henry Latrobe on the Susquehanna survey expedition.

A niece, Mary Ashhurst, wrote of his sad end: "As he was a hard student he was admitted to practice with great eclat and began his career with every prospect of success. These prospects were soon clouded as in consequence of intense application his mind became infected, and during a visit paid to his parents at Clover Hill in intensely hot weather, it became evident that he must be put under restraint. This was a great blow to his family, and as the treatment of the insane was not understood as it is now, my grandfather arranged a room in their house suitable for his malady, and with two attendants and the family physician, Dr. Kane, he languished for nine months, and without recovering his reason, died and was buried in Christ Church burial ground, 5th and Arch Streets".

Benjamin Henry Latrobe's epitaph to Robert Hazlehurst was inscribed on the long marble slab covering his grave. He was buried with his niece, Benjamin's daughter, Mary Agnes Latrobe.
