    • THOMAS MARSH (ca. 1615-ca. 1656). BORN: ca. 1615, probably in England. IMMIGRATED: in 1648/49 as a free adult with wife Margaret and children from Virginia. RESIDED: in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, 1637-1648/49; Broad Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel County, 1649 -death.
      MARRIED first, Margaret Harford.
      MARRIED second, Sarah (last name possibly Pitt).
      CHILDREN. SON: Thomas Marsh (ca. 1643-1679). DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth (?-1684), who married Thomas Taylor (?-1684/85); Margaret, who married first, Richard (?-by 1669), son of Richard Preston (ca. 1618-ca. 1669/70), and second, William Berry (ca. 1636-1691).
      PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. Marsh gave bond for William Durand (?-1672), an elder of the Independent Church in Virginia, and left Virginia shortly after Durand was exiled. Marsh was cited by the court of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, for not attending the parish church and refusing to hear common prayer. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: transported to Virginia by Thomas Holt; called "Thomas Marsh (alias Rivers)"; Mr., by 1650. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: merchant, with vessel engaged in New England trade; planter; physician, 1651.
      PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE. Parliamentary Commission, 1655. OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES: justice, Provincial Court, 1655; signer of treaty with Susquehanna Indians, July 5, 1652. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Anne Arundel County, 1650.
      WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: over 500 acres (had owned at least 150 acres in Upper Norfolk, Virginia, prior to emigration).
      WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: probably in late November or December 1655, certainly by March 20, 1656/57, when the administration of his estate was granted to his widow, Sarah Marsh. Marsh apparently died of wounds received in the battle against the proprietor's forces at Providence, Anne Arundel County, March 25, 1655.
