    Notes
    • James Breckinridge was a Captain in the Confederate Army. He was commanding sharpshooters when he was killed in the Battle of Five Forks, Dinwiddie County, VA. His body was never recovered. In 1955, 5 VMI buttons were found by archeologists who were searching for artifacts before a highway was to be constructed. The buttons were sent to the Virginia Military Institute Commandant for identification. It was determined that James Breckinridge was the only VMI solder unaccounted for who fought at Five Forks. Three Breckinridge brothers were graduated from VMI and the school knew that James was the 2nd great uncle of a 1952 graduate and they wrote to his mother, Sarah St. John, asking what the family wished to do with the remains-only 5 buttons. She wrote back and said, as only a child of Virginia can, "Let the fallen warrior lie on the field where he was slain." [www.findagrave.com]

A grave marker honoring him was placed next to his wife at Longwood Cem, Bedford, VA.
