- John Purviance graduated from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, and studied law in the office of Robert Smith in Baltimore. He came to the Bar in November 1793. During the war with Great Britain, he was one of the leading counsels in the Federal Courts in Baltimore. He subsequently became the regular counsel of the various Marine Insurance Companies of Baltimore. When a vacancy occurred on the bench Mr. Purviance was recommended to the Governor, and on 7 May 1833, John Purviance was appointed associate Justice of the Sixth Judicial District of Maryland comprising Baltimore city and county, and Harford Co..
