    Notes
    • Isaac Hazlehurst was born in Manchester, England. The family came from Knutsford, Cheshire. He first came to America between 1762 and 1765 and established himself in Philadelphia, PA. He went back to England and finally returned to America in 1768.
He established the Hazlehurst mercantile firm in Philadelphia, PA in 1768. It failed in 1808 along with the Hazlehurst firms in Charleston, SC and Baltimore. The cause of these failures which plunged the nation into "a general feeling of frustration, national dishonor and dissatisfaction," according to Benjamin Henry Latrobe were the repudiation by the British government of the Erskine agreement and the subsequent renewal of the United States of non intercourse with Britain.

Isaac Hazlehurst is among those who affixed their signature to the continental money. George Blagden Hazlehurst added a note to this dated Dec. 28, 1898 saying that he always tried to find some, but only succeeded in finding one signed by Robert Hazlehurst, Isaac's brother.

During the Revolution, on the day before the Battle of Monmouth, the British arrived on the Hazlehurst front lawn and took possession of the dwelling as the Headquarters of Lord Corwallis and his entire staff. The two parlours were given up to the officers, but Mrs. Hazlehurst retained her bedroom on the first floor. Mr. Hazlehurst said that the family was treated with courtesy and respect, and efforts were made to restrain the soldiers from damaging the property.

When they learned that the British were coming, the family just had time to bury silver and other valuables in the garden and orchard. Julia Latrobe related this as follows: "The terror of my grandparents can be imagined during the short sojourn of these troops. I have heard my grandfather describe his feeling as he saw a soldier tie his horse to a tree, at the foot of which a box of valuable was buried, a bag of oats was thrown down and he expected each moment to see the earth scraped away and the box discovered. This box containing many articles of value, when sought for after the war was over, was never found. The passage of so many horses and vehicles had completely covered over all traces of the spot where in haste and confusion it had been placed."
His grave marker lists the date of birth as 22 Nov. 1742 whereas the date of birth is listed elsewhere as 11 Nov. 1742.
