    • Nicholas Roosevelt was a great-great uncle of Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States. He was an inventor, mining engineer, metallurgist and associated with Benjamin Henry Latrobe in the production of steam engines for the Philadelphia Waterworks and several other business ventures.
      In addition, he was a great-great grand uncle of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

      In Pittsburgh, Pa. the New Orleans, the first steamboat to go down the western waters (Mississippi) to New Orleans was built under the supervision of Nicholas J. Roosevelt. It was designed by Robert Fulton. It set off from Pittsburgh in October 1811. The only passengers were Lydia and Nicholas Roosevelt and their first child, Rosetta Mark Roosevelt. Their second child, Henry Latrobe Roosevelt was born on 30 October 1811 during the voyage in Louisville, Ky. They arrived in New Orleans in January 1812.
