    • Benjamin was an attorney in Prince Edward Co., VA in 1773, and a clerk of the Prince Edward Committee of Safety in June and Nov 1775. He entered the 4th Virginia Regiment as a sergeant, Apr 1776; was regimental paymaster from 3 Aug 1777 to Jun 1779; was commissioned 2nd lieutenant, 3 Mar 1780; tranferred to the 2nd Virginia Regiment, 12 Feb 1781; and became captain by the end of the war.
