    • Joel Lewis was an officer during the Revolutionary War. He fought at the battles of Brandywine Creek, PA (11 Sep 1777); Germantown, PA (4 Oct 1777); Colson's Mill, NC (21 Jul 1780); Hanging Rock, SC (6 Aug 1780); Camden, SC (16 Aug 1780); King's Mountain, SC (7 Oct 1780); Shallow Ford, NC (14 Oct 1780); Hart's Mill, NC (17 Feb 1781); Haw River, NC (25 Feb 1781); Dickey's Farm, NC (26 Feb 1781); and Whitesell's Mill, NC (6 Mar 1781). He was captured by the British at the battle of Camden, SC, but soon escaped, and was wounded at the battle of King's Mountains, SC.

      His grave and tombstone were relocated to the city cemetery in 1912 from his home, "Manchester."
