Wow! It's been almost a whole year since I posted any articles to my site. But that doesn't mean I haven't been busy with genealogy. I have been hard at work adding Google Maps to my online data. Family Tree Maker 2010/2011 has a nice mapping feature which gives you a visual representation for all those crazy place names. But getting those maps to show in my online tree proved to be quite a hassle. |

Well, I tried to import a Family Tree Maker 2010 Gedcom into my online data and ran into a few snags. This was to be expected. Before exporting I tried deleting a person and adding someone else. With FTM 16, deleting a person left an empty record which caused all the higher records to shift up when a Gedcom was created. Luckily, adding a person filled in that empty record which prevented this shift and unwanted renumbering. |

I wrote previously about upgrading from Family Tree Maker version 16 to 2010. If you read my article on Reference Numbers then you'll understand my dependence on consistent Gedcom creation. Without a reliable Gedcom I am unable to maintain permanent links to people in my online genealogy. |

To start things off, I'm currently at 19967 people in my tree. I haven't done much (of anything) on this site in the last 6 months, but I've still been adding names to the genealogy. A thank you goes out to everyone who's been contacting me with changes and updates. Speaking of changes, I just upgraded to Windows 7, and it's not going to have any of the problems Vista had. |

I've just added reference numbers to each individual in my family tree. Up until recently I've never used them since I didn't think they were necessary. But as my tree grows, so do the number of duplicate names. If I had solid dates for every person then reference numbers might be redundant. But since I currently have (6) Elizabeth Earecksons without birth dates, it was time to start using them. |
