    • John enlisted 9 Dec 1807 as an ensign in the 2nd Infantry, was promoted to second lieutenant 8 Oct 1809, but resigned 1 Sep 1810. He was then commissioned captain in the 20th Infantry, 12 Mar 1812, was promoted to major 3 Mar 1813, and to lieutenant colonel 28 Jun 1815.
