| Notes |
- John Herbert Claiborne attended Randolph-Macon College in 1844, the Univ. of Virginia, 1848-49, and received his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1850. He represented Petersburg in the House of Delegates, 1855-56, and Petersburg and Prince George Co. in the Virginia Senate from 1857-61. He was recommended 26 Apr 1861 as captain of volunteers, and on 4 May 1861 was nominated as surgeon in the Provisional Army of Virginia. He was a major on 17 Feb 1862 when commissioned surgeon of the 12th Virginia Regiment, C.S.A., and later served on the General Medical Staff of the Confederate Army. In 1904 he published his autobiography, "Seventy-Five Years in Old Virginia."
